Blending the cinematic and soulful, Rachel’s multi-octave range flows effortlessly from fierce power to deep and deadly soft. **FULL** REB FOUNTAIN with full band | JASMINE RODGERS

    Guest List Full | Doors 18:45 | Live 19:15 | Finish 10:45

    REB FOUNTAIN w BAND | Saturday 13 May 2023 |

In October 2021, Reb Fountain released IRIS, her sophomore album via Flying Nun Records, to critical acclaim. Martin Aston from MOJO magazine called Reb, New Zealand’s next alt-folk sensation” and Karl Pushmann, VIVA New Zealand Herald, states, “From the moment you press play, IRIS envelops you.”

Winner of the 2021 Taite Music Prize and the Aotearoa Music Award for Best Country Music Album and APRA Best Song in 2018, songwriter Reb Fountain is a consummate recording artist and performer: stunning audiences with her music and artistry alike.  A perfect extension of her 2020 self-titled album, IRIS elevates Reb Fountain’s music to new heights. Here, Reb effortlessly combines pop elements with her trademark noir folk-punk sound, weaving authentic and anthemic tunes that create an instant and indelible impression.

“Reb Fountain is one of those artists that you don’t know but need to see.” Scenestr, 2022

Reb was born in San Francisco and emmigrated with her family from North America to Lyttelton — the quiet port town out of Christchurch that’s been fundamental to New Zealand’s alt-folk scene, raising artists like Marlon Williams, Aldous Harding, and Delaney Davidson.

Throughout 2020, Reb and her all-star band astounded audiences around the country on her sold out album release tour, joined Crowded House on their 13 date, ‘To The Island Tour’, and honoured Nick Cave at the sold out Auckland Town Hall show, ‘The Boy Next Door’.

Reb Fountain and band made their Australian debut at Womadelaide 2022. They have just completed a nationwide tour of New Zealand performing to sold out audiences in Aotearoa’s most iconic theatres to critical acclaim.

“Shaman-like, Fountain moves across the stage and through the various stages of herself to deliver these songs, devotionals. She and band are not just world class performers, they might in fact be world-beaters.” Simon Sweetman, 2022

“I watched Reb Fountain last Saturday, prowling across the stage like Patti Smith and Cat Power one- minute, Nick Cave living his best life the next. Reb was a revelation. I could have watched that show on any stage in the world – and Reb
would have deserved to be there.” Stuff, 2022

“At first, I thought I was listening to a cross between Patti Smith and Nick Cave but these comparisons quickly fall away as Reb is a true original.” Hifiway, 2022

“Unleashed and unafraid, Reb Fountain is a revelation”  Sunday Star Times

“Reb Fountain possesses a crystalline vocal that’s as stunning as it is assured.” American Songwriter

“Keating is the epitome of what it means to be a truly successful songwriter” –  American Songwriter

“A hard frost is where both the air and the ground freeze, one in which only the sturdiest of plants can survive. With this outstanding album, Keating again proves herself a true enduring perennial in her chosen field.” – Folk Radio UK

Critics are already raving about “Hard Frost,” calling it an absolute triumph and a work of beauty. From the haunting and extraordinary melodies to the impeccable storytelling, this album showcases Keating at her best.”  -– The Broken Spine

    ROBERT VINCENT | KATIE SPENCER

    GUEST LIST FULL | Doors 18:45 | Live 19:15 | Finish 22:30

*AMERICANA MUSIC ASSOCIATION UK's 2021 UK Artist of the YEAR and 2021 UK Album of the YEAR*

Since his debut album ‘Life in Easy Steps’ in 2013, Robert Vincent from Liverpool has been one of the most acclaimed new voices in Americana, Country and Folk. Having received the inaugural Emerging Artist Award from ‘Whispering’ Bob Harris in 2016 – who described Vincent as “absolutely magnetic”, Robert was then invited onto BBC4’s ‘Old Grey Whistle Test: For One Night Only’. That performance marked a real breakthrough for Vincent, establishing him as one of the UK’s leading lights in Americana and propelling him to #1 in the iTunes Country chart

On Robert's latest offering ‘In This Town You’re Owned’, he returns with his most relevant album to date, produced by Brit Award winning Ethan Johns – who has won acclaim for his production work with, amongst others, Paul McCartney, Ray LaMontagne, Laura Marling, Kings of Leon, The Boxer Rebellion, The Staves, Gilbert O’Sullivan and Tom Jones. What a great result for Robert and Ethan Johns scooping Album of the Year. Overall fantastic achievements for Robert. What an unbelievable climb it's been after so many years of writing and recording.

Robert has performed extensively across the UK, Europe and the USA alongside such classic artists as Elvis Costello, Robert Plant, James Blunt, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Beth Nielsen Chapman and Paul Carrack. Exciting times ahead as plans are now well under way for Robert's return to a live stage. Stay tuned for future announcements on ‘THIS TOWN TOUR 2021/22’ and ‘STRINGS ATTACHED’ concert events.

    KATIE SPENCER

Raised in the East Yorkshire flatlands on the fringes of Hull, Katie Spencer’s landscape has always been that of open skies and widening rivers. Industry still shapes the city here. The people, as with the land, are moulded by tides and stark horizons. Stand in the same place for long enough and you can watch the sun rise over the North Sea and then sink into crop fields, glowing auburn in late-summer sun. It is this sense of space and movement that flows through Katie Spencer’s music.

The songwriting, and most notably her guitar playing stems from a time when the steel-stringed instrument was truly finding its voice. Artists like Joni Mitchell, James Taylor and perhaps most evidently Michael Chapman, flow into her sound, carrying with them the warmth and idealism of the early 70’s folk and songwriter movements.

Katie Spencer’s widely celebrated new album, The Edge of the Land (2022), follows her debut release, Weather Beaten (2019) which was praised for its unique song-craft, spell-binding musicianship and crystal sonic clarity, as she brought together fans of music from all backgrounds and walks of life. Delicate and un-rushed, the ten songs on The Edge of the Land drift by like ships on the horizon, yet intimacy and introspection still remain.

The inclusivity found in her recorded works is most apparent when on stage, with a personal connection and humour that allows the listener time to appreciate the emotion of the music. Her historical gig list is extensive, taking in the world-renowned Celtic Connections and Cambridge Folk Festival, whilst performances with Danny Thompson and Alan Thomson have left audiences in awe of her confidence and craftsmanship.

As live music has returned to our world, we can expect to see Katie Spencer where she belongs once more, eyes closed, in the moment, performing.

    --

Her articulate picking, with suggestions of folk and jazz, frames intelligently written songs and is the backbone to her music.” Guitarist Magazine

One of the most satisfying and spellbinding singer-songwriter collections I’ve encountered in some time.” RnR Magazine ★★★★★

Imaginative imagery supported by compelling music that summons up the best of early 70s folk, fluently delivered here with its own contemporary power. This is a fine collection of memorable songs by an outstanding writer and musician.” Record Collector

A timeless English folk album, perfect for the still calm of a Sunday morning.” Shindig!

Katie Spencer sits gracefully in a vocal nook between Sandy Denny, Linda Thompson and, to conjure a name we hear less often these days, Bridget St John.” Prog Magazine

The way Katie plays is never contrived, showy or imitative; it sounds true … a world-class folk guitarist”fRoots

Katie’s guitar playing has echoes of my dear friend the late great Bert Jansch. Like a musical weaver she threads her poetic lyrics through the guitar’s strings and produces little tapestries of song” – Ralph McTell
